Summary

One of Agatha Christie's most famous novels, featuring her beloved detective Hercule Poirot--and her most surprising twist。

The story that made Agatha Christie famous ends with one of her most dramatic twists。 The villagers of King's Abbot are shocked when a wealthy local widow commits suicide and the very next day her fianc, Roger Ackroyd, is stabbed to death。 Dr。 James Sheppard, the local physician, discovers the body of his friend and narrates the ensuing hunt for the killer。 All the guests and staff at Ackroyd's country house seem to have solid alibis--except for his missing stepson。 But as the authorities home in on their most obvious suspect, the recently retired detective Hercule Poirot unexpectedly turns up and joins the fray。 Dr。 Sheppard gamely assists the legendary Poirot as he untangles one of the most fiendish mysteries in Christie's extensive oeuvre。

Not my cup of tea。 I’ve been biased about Agatha Christie and her annoying little Belgian detective Mr。 Poirot all my life。 Recently, a Netflix movie piqued my curiosity。 Then a Great Courses program suggested this as Christie’s best detective story。 Other sources confirmed that。 i decided to give it a try listening to the Audiobook。From the beginning, I struggled with the 1926 British conventionality and the rigid class system it portrayed。 Then, along comes Mr。 Poirot, at his inimitable and an Not my cup of tea。 I’ve been biased about Agatha Christie and her annoying little Belgian detective Mr。 Poirot all my life。 Recently, a Netflix movie piqued my curiosity。 Then a Great Courses program suggested this as Christie’s best detective story。 Other sources confirmed that。 i decided to give it a try listening to the Audiobook。From the beginning, I struggled with the 1926 British conventionality and the rigid class system it portrayed。 Then, along comes Mr。 Poirot, at his inimitable and annoying best。 Sorry, just not for me。As a mystery goes, the final resolution is unique and cleverly done。 Enough so, I’m giving the story an extra star。 Otherwise, cold tea and stale crumpets。 。。。more

I super loved listening to the audiobook version of this。 Hugh Fraser's voice is so good and endearing。 I think listening to the audiobook had a huge impact in my liking of this book。 I already read two Agatha Christie books before this - "And Then There Were None" and "Murder on the Orient Express" and this one is my favorite out of the three。 Agatha Christie's storytelling is so witty and while I somewhat predicted the twist coming I still can't believe when it was revealed。 I think the ending I super loved listening to the audiobook version of this。 Hugh Fraser's voice is so good and endearing。 I think listening to the audiobook had a huge impact in my liking of this book。 I already read two Agatha Christie books before this - "And Then There Were None" and "Murder on the Orient Express" and this one is my favorite out of the three。 Agatha Christie's storytelling is so witty and while I somewhat predicted the twist coming I still can't believe when it was revealed。 I think the ending was bittersweet since I came to love every characters in this story。 Also, re-reading the parts where the clues are was mind-blowing。 I can't wait to read "Death on the Nile" next! 。。。more

Well, shit! I wasn’t expecting *that*! Really twisted。 I’m a little thunderstruck and a little horrified and more than a little creeped out。This device of Christie’s really gets under my skin, leading me to feel much more viscerally disturbed than I have reading any of her other books。 Usually, honestly, for murder mysteries, they are very light, mildly amusing, comfortingly unrealistic, seriously dated (with all of the many problems that come with seriously dated literature - ::cough:: racism : Well, shit! The narrator is the killer? I didn’t guess until Poirot laid out the facts in the scene before。 A twist like no other, creativity at its best。 Definitely 5*!

Hahahaha - yes! Brilliant!Loved this one - maybe because the narration was so fabulous! I can’t forgive the frustrating stupidity of M。 Poirot’s dear-but-slow-on-the-uptake friend, Hastings, who narrated The Mysterious Affair at Styles and drove me nuts。 Dr。 Sheppard is something else again。 This mystery I loved: it feels like the archetypal sleepy British town mystery with the usual suspects - and lots of little mysteries cleared up along the way - and, yes, a dash of Poe thrown in。 I love me s Hahahaha - yes! Second or third Agatha Christie I’ve read。 Can’t say whether I prefer, and then there were none or the murder of Roger Ackroyd is better。 They are both great reads。 Most books I read with a handful of colored pens and highlighters。 This book is a welcome break and compelling read。 I found I couldn’t put it down。

Talk about a plot twist! One of the best mysteries I have ever read。 Keeps you guessing until the end

Justine

I can see why this twist would have worked when the book was first released, but in 2022 it just felt predictable from the start unfortunately。 But even so, I didn’t dislike the book, I wasn’t exactly bored and I think I just wanted more Poirot。 To sum up: it was just fine。

This was an engrossing story right from the beginning。 I took my chances in solving the mystery, but it went way past any of my guessing abilities。 At the beginning, I had darted all my suspense at one person and then with the developing clues and motives, I started switching between few others, in fact almost everyone else, except the murderer。 The characters, clues and motives all were well presented and with that it became difficult in ticking off the suspects。 I did get some of the side theo This was an engrossing story right from the beginning。 I took my chances in solving the mystery, but it went way past any of my guessing abilities。 At the beginning, I had darted all my suspense at one person and then with the developing clues and motives, I started switching between few others, in fact almost everyone else, except the murderer。 The characters, clues and motives all were well presented and with that it became difficult in ticking off the suspects。 I did get some of the side theories right, but couldn't come even close to the main one。 It never occurred to me that it was even a possibility。 In a way, I feel little cheated, but this was really good in keeping the thrill and suspense up until the very end。Unpredictable and cleverly written book that plays well with the truth and deception。 。。。more

Proud to say I actually guessed this one。 Using my experience from past Christie novels, I interrogated certain "that strikes me as odd" impulses that I ignored in previous books, and, while not too long before Poirot reveals it, I *did* guess it before his spiel begins。 Love that the book subtly teaches you how to approach the mystery, if you're paying attention。 Proud to say I actually guessed this one。 Using my experience from past Christie novels, I interrogated certain "that strikes me as odd" impulses that I ignored in previous books, and, while not too long before Poirot reveals it, I *did* guess it before his spiel begins。 Love that the book subtly teaches you how to approach the mystery, if you're paying attention。 。。。more
